Penelope's has a bunch of cute A.P.C. summer stuff on sale!

i really miss this guy

This is the second week that my husband Joe has been gone. He's doing a med school rotation in New Mexico, where he is adventuring in the mountains and saving boy scouts. I am very lonely for him. So are the cats even. All they do is sleep all day. I myself am in full workaholic mode without him, designing my fall collection. Acting like a basket case.

in the shop on saturday

There's going to be something new in the shop tomorrow--something you haven't seen yet. It's the Summer Ellybeth Dress. In sizes 2 and 6. The soft gray linen fabric has delicate white stripes, and it's one of my favorites ever. This is the most comfortable dress you'll wear all summer. It's loose and easy but doesn't fit like a sack, as you can tell from the side view. You'll feel effortlessly chic in it, I promise. Like a cool French girl who doesn't even need to try.

the dressing room diaries: the gap

So I've been shopping a lot lately. So what? Joe's out of town. I'm lonely.

I arrived at the Gap in my own clothes: chambray Built By Wendy top, black Paper Denim and Cloth jeans, Kragh Rosenberg bag, and A.P.C. mocs.

I tried on this dress and did a curtsy. Because I'm a lady. The dress is only available online because it's from the European collection, but I guess somebody returned one to the store. It was huge on me, but I really liked it. I'm not usually into tiered styles, but the beautiful linen fabric grabbed my attention right away. I would have never even considered buying this online had I not seen it in the store. When I got home I ordered the dress from the website in a size 4 (the one I tried on was a 10), and it was only 25 bucks! There are several dresses from the European collection on sale for around that same price here. They're pretty cute and as cheap as a dress from Target but better quality. Just to give you an idea about the European collection's sizing, I am normally a Wiksten size 6.

I'm sorry that I'm such an enabler. Note to self: stop spending so much money on clothes and start saving up for a decent camera!

my new seamstress

A few weeks ago I finally bit the bullet and hired a seamstress to help me with my work. Her name is Christy Berry. (I also hired an intern named Mallory.) You'll be hearing more about Christy in another month when my fall collection becomes available because she's designing a little something special for me.

Here are a few pictures that I took of Christy's personal work.

Christy not only sewed this dress but also printed the fabric using a linoleum block she carved.

birks are back, baby!

I have a history of trying to make typically "uncool" shoes cool. I don't shy away from granny shoes, boat shoes, clogs (this fall I'm really going to get some), and now Birkenstocks. I know. People think Birkenstocks are so uncool. You know what's even more uncool? Getting matching Birkenstocks with your friend. But when I was in Montana visiting Elly we both agreed that we liked Birkenstocks. It's okay because I think we're past the point in our lives where we care if other people think our shoes are cool.
Elly sent me this photo of her wearing hers. Little did she know I'd show my blog readers. But I think she looks pretty badass.

I promptly copied her outfit in my own picture.

Alysha really paved the way for us with her acceptance of the Birk.

Erica also rocks her Birkenstock-like sandals. Ok, hers are by Phillip Lim, but whatever. They still look like Birks.

Also, check out Allison in hers. Super cute.

the last kate top

There's one more Kate top left! Size 4. In the shop now.

the dressing room diaries

I went to the Banana Republic factory store today to return some pants for my husband, and I ended up in the dressing room trying on a skirt. I don't wear skirts. Ever. But that's okay because I really need to wear something other than jeans for once. So I decided to document the experience, Camille-style.

Here's the outfit I came in wearing: Forever21 button down, Old Navy cuffed shorts, and my white Chuck Taylors.

So I found this navy pleated skirt with a cute buttoned sailor flap detail, and it really fits in with what I've been wearing lately. I told Joe the other day that my ideal outfit would make me look like the kind of person who goes sailing alot. Someone who's rich. Preppy. Katharine Hepburn-ish. I tried the skirt on in my size, and it looked a little frumpy. Katharine Hepburn would never look frumpy.

So I grabbed a skirt two sizes too small, and voilĂ !--a high-waisted skirt is born. I think it looks better on me than the other one because it draws attention to my small waist instead of my "good child bearing hips". (Yes, people have said that about my hips.) But I'm afraid that after I actually bear children, I won't want to draw attention to my waist either! So I'll try to enjoy this style while I can.

Whoah, if I stand like this I look like a total nerd!

Hmmmm, I don't know about this....

Nah, it's fierce.

let's makeup

I'm going to get a little girly today and talk about makeup. The picture above is me without a stitch of makeup on. (Sorry for my annoying little smirk in these photos--ever since I got my braces on and off I don't know how to smile naturally for pictures anymore.) Most of the time I don't wear makeup. I'm too lazy, and I just don't care.

This is me with makeup. I only put makeup on for dates with Joe or maybe if I'm going to hang out with friends. So basically once or twice on the weekends. Since I'm so used to not wearing makeup, when I put it on I look like a clown/prostitute to myself. Most of the time I rub half of the makeup off for that reason. I just really like a natural look. Even when I look at these photos I like the one with no makeup the best. But sometimes a girl just needs to look a little polished.

So here's what I use, and I think it has a pretty natural effect (If you're one of my friends and you disagree with this, speak now or forever hold your peace.):

1. Bare Minerals Skin Rev-er Up-er. It allows the makeup go on smoothly.
2. Bare Minerals Foundation in medium. Just a light dusting of this does the trick, and I use it as a concealer too. (Did anyone else see this kind of makeup on QVC a couple of years ago? I was completely fascinated by it, and when the brand came to the Sephora in my mall, I HAD to try it out.)
3. Bare Minerals Well Rested. I put it under and on my eyelids with a concealer brush to wake my eyes up. This is something I need because I ALWAYS look tired.
4. Nars blush in Amour. A rosy glow is so pretty.
5. Bare Minerals Mineral Veil. A light dusting just seals all of the makeup into place.
6. Anastasia Brow Gel. I need this to keep my cuh-razy, unruly eyebrows in place.
7. Makeup Forever Eye Shadow in brown. I use a skinny angled brush to apply this as eyeliner. If you just barely wiggle it along the lash line, you can't even really tell you have eyeliner on.
8. Sephora Atomic Volume Mascara.
9. Nars Lipstick in Mindgame. It gives just a hint of color.

I know that sounds like a lot, but it really doesn't even take ten minutes to apply. What can I say? I'm a girl. I love makeup. Even if I'm too lazy or self-concious to wear it most of the time. It's just too fun to not try it every once in a while.

in the shop on saturday

The Ellybeth top will be in the shop this Saturday in sizes 0, 4, and 8. This is the last chance to purchase one! Check the size chart here to determine your size.

t-shirts are okay

At the beginning of the summer, I had very few t-shirts in my wardrobe. I wore so many thrift store and concert t-shirts in college that I sort of overdosed on them. My uniform was jeans, ratty old t-shirt, blazer, and chuck taylors. Over the past few years I've become allergic to that look and have thrown away most of my old t-shirts in an effort to grow the eff up. However, I've come to the realization that t-shirts are an infinitely practical item for the summer. You can find so many tees now that are sophisticated and chic (none of which have ironic messages on the front or come from Urban Outfitters or the Salvation Army). So I've started buying t-shirts again, sticking to ones with printed patterns or stripes.
I bought this Mociun t-shirt first of all because it's freaking awesome, but second of all because it's a way to own an affordable piece from one of my favorite clothing lines. It's the softest, best quality t-shirt I own. I love it so much that I'd like to buy it in the other color too.
I saw this shirt in Nylon magazine a year or two ago, and I've wanted it ever since. It's on sale here.

collector

Ok, my striped shirt collection is getting a little ridiculous....
J. Crew (I'm wearing this one today.)
A.P.C. (I actually bought this one for Elly because I already have it in the other colorway...They were on sale.)

film date: montana

I just got back from a wonderful vacation in Montana where I was visiting my bud Elly (and her husband Doug and daughter Tova). It was so awesome. Montana is a gorgeous place, but shhh, don't tell anyone! Dennis Quaid already found out, and Elly bumped into him at the market the other day. Check out some more of my Montana pics here.

The weird thing about my friendship with Elly is that we met on Flickr. Crazy, huh? Not really though, because even though I've only known her for about a year and a half, it almost feels like we grew up together. Maybe because we were raised in eerily similar ways and have an insane amount of stuff in common. Or maybe because we both laugh at Doug's "That's what she said" jokes every single time. Or maybe because whenever she orders food, I copy her and get the exact same thing. I don't know, but whatever it is, it's pretty fun.

Well, I'm off on vacation today. I'm going to Montana to visit Elly and looking forward to a week of giggling and girliness. Manicures are definitely on the agenda. See you back here next Friday! (P.S. Anything ordered from the shop after 3 PM today won't be shipped until next Friday.)

look books available for purchase

A few people mentioned to me that they'd like to purchase a Wiksten SS08 look book. Today I had a small number of them printed up for the shop. Here they are, in limited edition. Sorry they're so expensive, but I'm not even making a profit because of all the costs.

black sandals

I've been spending an embarrassing amount of time searching for the perfect black sandals. I want something that's good quality and very simple yet not boring.

A.P.C. Madras, available at Zoe
Good price. Nice, but maybe a little too boring? There's nothing much to them.

I think these are pretty cool, but shipping to the U.S. is $70! Ridiculous.

Coclico, on sale (but still a little pricey)
I think these are a good alternative to the gladiator trend. I like the idea of gladiator sandals, but I think many styles can be unflattering. I don't think these would be, plus they're simple but unique.

These are cute. But I already bought them in red last summer. They are cheap though!

Which ones are your favorites?

shim does it again!

So a couple of weeks ago my laptop broke. Then a day or two later, I broke Joe's laptop as well when I spilled water all over it. Don't worry, I slapped myself hard on the wrist for that one! Although, both laptops were about seven years old, so it's a wonder that they hadn't died long ago. Over the next few weeks two things happened: (1) our lawnmower broke and (2) our washing machine broke. I'm glad we paid that repair guy $80 to tell us the washer was unfixable. It just really hasn't been my summer. People already throw trash in our yard. (I think because maybe we don't mow it enough and the neighbors are trying to tell us something?) So we definitely had to buy a new mower right away. As for the washing machine? I'll still be handwashing my fabrics in the sink for the next few weeks. It's kind of fun though. I makes me feel like an old-timey washer woman.
There is some good news in all this though. We were able to use some student loan money to score a brand new desk top Mac! Woohoo! It's gorgeous. And huge. I can watch movies while I sew like I have a flatscreen tv. I never thought I'd be living in such luxury. And best of all, I finally had a good reason to get one of these Shim + Sons mousepads. I've been obsessing over them since I first saw them. They're even better in person. I can't for the life of me figure out how Sally makes them, but truthfully I'd rather not know. I prefer to think of it as magic.

obsess much

from Zoe
from Oak

from Sunshine and Shadow

Yeah, obviously I'm obsessed because these are only a fraction of the images I have compiled in a folder marked "sunshine and shadow dress" on my computer desktop. I fell in love with this dress the moment I layed eyes on it. It's on sale here, in my size. Oh wow. I don't know what to do. I'd like to think I was born to wear this dress, but the shape has the potential to be really unflattering on me. It looks awesome on the model, but then again she is a model-- thin and perfect. And since it's on sale, I can't return it. I've actually bought several different versions of each fabric the dress is made of. When I couldn't find my size online at first, I decided to make my own version. Normally I don't condone copying designs, but this might just be a state of emergency. What should I do? Buy or make? Not that I have time to make it.....
